01 · What Is TECAR Therapy?

TECAR therapy uses radiofrequency energy delivered through two distinct modes: capacitive and resistive. The capacitive mode targets shallower tissues such as skin, superficial fascia, and muscle. The resistive mode reaches deeper—into tendons, ligaments, joint capsules, and other dense, collagen-rich tissue. Being able to move between both layers in a single session is what makes TECAR so versatile across musculoskeletal conditions, offering both precision and range.

A clinical commentary by Lupowitz and colleagues (2025) describes TECAR as a rapidly maturing modality in orthopedic and sports rehabilitation, with growing evidence that it reduces pain, improves range of motion, and supports tissue regeneration.

02 · How Does TECAR Therapy Work?

TECAR therapy passes high-frequency current between an applicator and a return plate, increasing ionic motion inside the tissue. Heat is produced by the tissue itself—not delivered to it—and that controlled internal warmth triggers a cascade of natural healing responses that can continue for hours after the session ends. A foundational physiologic study by Kumaran and Watson (2015) documented exactly how this endogenous heat builds, retains, and decays in living tissue—the science that anchors the modality.

One key effect is vasodilation—the widening of blood vessels. This improves blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients to injured or painful areas while clearing waste and reducing swelling. A pilot study by Clijsen and colleagues (2020) confirmed that TECAR measurably increases skin and intramuscular microcirculation, with the deepest changes seen in resistive mode.

TECAR also has an analgesic effect. The combined warmth, circulation, and fascial release downregulate pain signaling in the treated area, and many patients describe a noticeable drop in pain within the first session.

Finally, TECAR promotes tissue regeneration. By energizing cell membranes and warming collagen-rich tissue, it makes restricted fascia and scar tissue temporarily more pliable—the window during which manual release work can reach what was previously inaccessible. It also reduces muscle tightness and encourages lymphatic drainage, clearing inflammation and preventing fluid buildup.

03 · What the Research Shows

The TECAR literature has grown substantially over the past decade—particularly in sports medicine, chronic pain, and post-injury recovery. A systematic review by Beltrame and colleagues (2020) in the International Journal of Rehabilitation Research found that nearly all reviewed studies reported improved strength and function and reduced pain after treatment, most commonly in spine disorders and knee osteoarthritis.

In a randomized controlled trial, Kumaran and Watson (2019, Physiotherapy) found that 448 kHz capacitive-resistive radiofrequency significantly improved pain and function in patients with knee osteoarthritis compared with sham treatment and standard care. And in a comparison of operating methods for non-specific chronic low back pain, Barassi and colleagues (2022) demonstrated that both capacitive and resistive modes produced measurable, well-tolerated changes in pain and tissue temperature.

Taken together, the evidence points in a consistent direction: TECAR is safe, well-tolerated, and effective for soft-tissue, joint, and post-injury concerns—especially when it is guided by an accurate diagnosis and layered with hands-on care.

04 · What Conditions Can TECAR Therapy Help?

Research and clinical experience support TECAR across a wide range of orthopedic and sports concerns, including:

  • Tendon and ligament injuries, including chronic tendinopathy
  • Muscle strains and soft-tissue damage
  • Joint pain and stiffness, including knee osteoarthritis
